ConversionMOXY Explains: What is Geofencing Marketing?
There is no question that there is an abundance of marketing tools available in today’s digital world. Merely a century ago in 1920, advertising was all print or in-person. A billboard or newspaper ad were the top forms of advertisements at the time. Fast forward to over 100 years later and there is almost no digital space that is ad free. This means businesses must be clever and creative when it comes to sharing about their business. One relatively new marketing tactic is called geofencing. It is a powerful marketing tool to bring in new customers. You might be asking, what is geofencing marketing? Don’t worry we’ve got you covered in our latest blog!
At conversionMOXY, we always want our clients to get the ‘biggest bang for their buck’. Therefore, we utilize some of the latest and newest marketing technology and platforms. Geofencing is one such platform. Thus, our latest blog covers all things geofencing. Ready to start or still have questions? We are only a phone call away! Give us a call at 336-245-1640 today!
What is Geofencing Marketing?
First, it is important to know everything you can about this marketing tool. That means we need to answer four major questions…
- What is geofencing marketing?
- How does it work?
- Where did it come from?
- How is it used?
Now, to answer question 1. In its simplest form, geofencing marketing is a form of advertising that targets people’s phones directly in a specific location then begins displaying ads. Imagine an invisible perimeter around a location. It can be a store, parking lot, etc. That is the geofence. Once someone enters that perimeter, the geofence technology picks up their mobile phone signal and ads are displayed on that person’s phone in various ad-allowing platforms.
Power of Digital Signals
Next, lets dig a little deeper into geofencing marketing technology to better understand it. To answer question 2, geofence technology utilizes digital signals to receive and send information, namely ads. First, it uses one of four types of digital technologies. Those are:
- GPS (Global Positioning System)
- RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
- Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)
- Cellular Data
Using one of those technologies listed above, a geofence, or digital perimeter, is formed. Shapes of the geofence vary depending on the location it is targeting. Then, again utilizing these technologies, once someone walks into the geofence area their phone is pinged. That ping allows the geofence to capture their cell phone ‘code’ and starts displaying ads on any platform that shows ads on their phone. For example, Google pay-per-click search results or Facebook are two such platforms.
Origins of Geofence Technology
As with any technology it is important to know where it comes from. Moving onto answering question 3, geofencing technology was invented by a drone company. In 2013, DJI (Da-Jiang Innovations) began developing geofence technology with their drone systems. DJI announced publicly about this technology in 2015 and it has been an innovative marketing tool basically ever since then.
Reach The Right Audience
Finally, onto the last, and possibly most important question for a business, how do I use geofencing technology? Imagine reaching the right audience with the right ad at the right time. Sound impossible? Luckily, that is a possibility with geofencing technology! Our experienced team of geofence marketing experts will work closely with you to determine where to place your geofence, what ads to run to anyone who enters your geofence, and when these ads should appear on their phones.
Frequently Asked Content Marketing Questions

Don’t see your question? Simply give us a call at 336-245-1640 and we are happy to answer any other questions on geofencing marketing.
Where do geofencing ads show up?
We touched a little on this earlier in the blog, but we want to dive a little deeper into this subject. A geofencing ad will show up on any platform that allows ads. A few examples of those include:
- Pay-per-click Ads
- Google Search Results
- Other Social Media
These are only a few of the places a geofence ad will run. During our consultations, we will discuss in detail your advertising objectives. From there we tailor a plan on the best places to display your ad to reach your target audience.
How much does geofencing advertising cost?
Like other digital advertising methods, there is no one set cost for geofencing advertising. It varies depending on multiple variables. A few of those factors include:
- Size of geofence
- Amount of time geofence runs
- Types of ads selected to show
- Where ads show
As with pay-per-click advertising, businesses love that with this type of advertising you can set your own budget. We always work closely to stay within our client’s budgets.
Why should I use geofencing marketing?
This might sound like a simplified answer, but why not use it? As one of the leading ways to find and target audiences, it is too useful a tool to pass up! You set the budget and we use every cent of it to really reach who you are trying to sell to.
How will I know geofencing marketing is working?
We can’t speak for other marketing agencies, but at conversionMOXY we track everything! From clicks to how long someone stays on your website, we literally track it all. This is the only way to know what does – and doesn’t – work. No matter what those results say, we share all this telling data with our clients. We use it to know not only when we are on the right track, but when to shift methods if something isn’t working.
